NBA legend Michael Jordan captivated everyone with his athletic displays and mind-boggling gameplays on the hardwood. Apart from his exploits on the court, Jordan has amassed a staggering empire through lucrative deals with brands and wise investments. Over the years, as MJ gained traction in the sports world, he created history and became the first NBA player to become a billionaire in 2016. However, fans might be surprised after knowing that the NBA legend’s billionaire status doesn’t perturb him at all. In fact, he’s quite indifferent about it.

Jordan started to climb the stairs of success back in the 90s when he won his first ring with the Chicago Bulls in 1991. The six-time champion’s popularity started to explode more that it already had after that time. Therefore, several notable companies like Nike and McDonald’s started to bank on his growing popularity and market him to raise their company’s brand value. On the other hand, MJ, apart from dominating the basketball court, benefitted millions of dollars from such ventures. Therefore, as the years went by, the now 59-year-old eventually earned his billionaire status.

Michael Jordan is indifferent about his billionaire status and wealth

In a 2017 interview with Marvin R. Shanken of Cigar Aficionado, Jordan unveiled his view on his wealth and billionaire status. During the interview, Shanken asked Jordan a question with a bit of hesitation. He asked, “You are recognized in the business press—I hate to even use the word, I apologize for using the word—as a billionaire.” The 14x All-Star replied, “Me? Hmm. What does that mean?”

Shanken further insisted, “What does it mean?” In response, Jordan said, ” I don’t think it changes anything. Other than that people can call on me and ask me for money maybe.”

In other words, Jordan’s statements indicated that the billionaire status didn’t significantly change anything in his life. It implied that MJ still held on to his core beliefs like the young kid playing for North Carolina. Only the behavior of the people around him haschanged after his entry in the billionaire club.

Despite being unfazed by his wealth, surprisingly, the six-time champion is currently heading towards the $2 billion club. According to Forbes, His Airness currently has a net worth of $1.7 billion. Within a span of over five years, he was able to increase his net worth by a significant amount.
