Amidst the latest controversy involving Kyrie Irving, news broke that the Los Angeles Lakers had refused to offer a long-term contract to the Brooklyn Nets star during the off-season. Several months ago, the Lakers were looking at a possible Russell Westbrook-Kyrie Irving trade with the Nets. However, the trade fell through and Lakers fans are feeling relieved as if their team dodged a bullet.

Kyrie Irving is constantly under public scrutiny and right now, it is not for good reasons. The Brooklyn Nets recently suspended the seven-time NBA All-Star. The decision came after Irving promoted an antisemitic documentary on Twitter. Irving will remain suspended for at least five matches and he will not be paid either.

Following his tweet, the NBA champion previously had a minor outburst during a media conference. This happened when Irving was asked about the controversial post. Furthermore, Irving seemingly made matters worse with an unapologetic statement. While he did apologize shortly afterward, it was too late for him as the Brooklyn Nets had already decided to suspend him by then.

Given that Irving is neck-deep in controversies at the moment, Lakers fans are relieved more than ever that the deal never happened.

It recently came to light that the Los Angeles Lakers never had plans of giving a long-term contract to Kyrie Irving. The Lakers wanted Irving to join alongside Anthony Davis and LeBron James in exchange for Russell Westbrook. Even Irving reportedly considered the idea for a while. While there were several reasons why the deal never pulled through, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski recently shed some light on it.

As the new development came forth, Lakers fans expressed their thoughts on their teams’ decision.

The Brooklyn Nets are currently 12th in the Eastern Conference with a 3-6 record in the season so far. Meanwhile, the Lakers started the season with five straight defeats. They currently sit 13th in the Western Conference with a 2-6 record so far.
