American prisoner Paul Whelan has had his plight noticed by millions around the world over the past few months. Following the controversial arrest of Brittney Griner, his name popped up on multiple reports. They claimed that he would possibly be a part of the prisoner swap deal that brought Griner home. However, the reality turned out to be completely different. He is still serving time in a Russian prison and this has triggered a huge chunk of people.
Recently, he was in conversation with CNN from his penal colony located in the region of Mordovia, Russia. Apart from hoping that the administration does something to bring him back home, he delivered a spine-chilling 8-word message that would shake everyone to the core.

Former Marine Paul Whelan was convicted of espionage charges in 2018. Following a long court battle, the Russian judiciary sentenced him to 16 years in prison. However, a ray of hope came into the life of Whelan in the form of Brittney Griner.
The Phoenix Mercury star was arrested in Russia and sentenced to nine years in prison. A prisoner swap deal was on the table involving Griner and notorious arms dealer Viktor Bout. Interestingly, Whelan was also named in the deal by reports around the world.
Roughly one month after Griner’s release, he is still serving his sentence in Russia. During a call with CNN, he called out the Joe Biden administration hoping that they find a solution for him soon.
Whelan said during the call, “I was arrested for a crime that never occurred.” He further added a chilling 8-word message as he said, “I don’t understand why I’m still sitting here.”

The officials have failed in securing a release for Whelan in the past. In the meantime, two Americans, Trevor Reed and Brittney Griner were able to head back home after successful negotiations.
Brittney Griner rallied her supporters for Whelan
7 time WNBA All-Star hasn’t forgotten about the plight of a fellow American in Russia after her release. Taking to Instagram, she posted a letter where she rallied her supporters to write to Whelan.
Griner wrote in the letter, “I hope you’ll join me in writing to Paul Whelan and continuing to advocate for other Americans to be rescued and returned to their families.”

In the same post, she revealed how the multiple letters she received while in prison helped her a lot. Similarly, the letters being sent to Paul Whelan will help him during this tough time.
