Paul Pierce Urges Kevin Garnett to Take Anthony Davis Under His Wing: ”They Say He’s the Next KG. You Should Be Working With Him”

Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett, two legends of the Boston Celtics, have won it all. The duo led the Celtics to an NBA championship in 2008 along with various other individual accolades. During an interview, Paul Pierce brought up the topic of Anthony Davis to Garnett.

Anthony Davis’ similarities to Garnett’s style mean that he’s often labeled the next KG. Their attributes, especially physicality and shot-blocking ability, have often led to comparisons between the two. 

Talking on Garnett’s show on the Showtime Basketball YouTube channel, Paul Pierce put forth a pretty interesting proposition. According to him, Garnett should take Davis under his wing because Davis is dubbed as the next KG.

The two NBA legends talked about the league and the sport in general among a host of others topics. While talking about the Los Angeles Lakers and their season, the topic of Anthony Davis came up.

Garnett said, “Everything should have went through AD. I thought AD was young enough to be able to carry this team, I thought he came to LA to take some of the pressure off LeBron James.” Paul Pierce added, “I think he needs to call you up. They said he is the next KG. You should be working with him.“

With such disappointing displays this season, Anthony Davis can take the help of someone as established as Kevin Garnett.

Why is AD called the next Kevin Garnett?

Although Anthony Davis might not be having the best of seasons, no one can deny his talent. Considered one of the most talented power forwards to play in the league, he is a big man with the athleticism and mobility of a guard.

Garnett and Davis are two players who are known for their defensive play. Much like Garnett, AD also gives his services on both ends of the court.  

During an AMA on Reddit, AD revealed how he modeled his play around the NBA legend Kevin Garnett. AD said, “A guy I’ve looked up to a lot was Kevin Garnett. I always wanted to be like him, play both sides, be a fierce competitor.”

Anthony Davis vs KG comparison

The two power forwards have an NBA championship each. Kevin Garnett clinched the 2008 NBA title along with Paul Pierce and Ray Allen for the Boston Celtics, while AD won a championship in 2020.

Garnett has made it to the All-Defensive 1st team a whopping 9 times while winning Defensive Player of the Year once. On the other hand, AD is yet to win the Defensive Player of the Year award and has made it to the team 2 times.

Although Garnett might have the accolades, Anthony Davis dominates when stats are considered. He averages 23.8 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game. Garnett, on the other hand, had an average of 17.8 points, 10.0 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game.
