Brittney Griner must be trying her best to adjust to the horrific conditions inside the IK-2 penal colony in Mordovia. The WNBA star is serving her nine-year sentence after being moved to the far-off part of Russia, 210 miles east of Moscow. Recently, a former inmate of the IK-14 facility in Mordovia suggested that more than 100 female inmates could face torture if Brittney Griner made one crucial mistake.

The founding member of Pussy Riot, Nadya Tolokonnikova, recently talked about the inhumane conditions Brittney Griner might face inside IK-2. Tolokonnikova spent nearly two years in a penal colony for protesting against Russian president Vladimir Putin outside the main cathedral in Moscow.

The women’s rights activist stated that BG was being held at the harshest penal colony in Russia. She further suggested that prisoners were treated like slaves. They usually have to work up to 17 hours a day. Furthermore, she revealed that prisoners who fail to meet the daily quota of work faced abuse and torture.?

The Russian activist also pointed out the lack of medical facilities or support from prisoner doctors to help inmates tackle abuse. Tolokonnikova was scared that Griner might end up hiding the truth about being oppressed because the same thing happened to her.

She revealed,?“I was told that if I am gonna say one single person about the abuses that I am going through, the whole penal colony is going to suffer because of me.”

The Pussy Riot member disclosed that she was threatened by the authorities to keep her mouth shut. Tolokonnikova kept silent for a year due to the fear of hurting her fellow inmates.

Nadya Tolokonnikova continued to protest in the form of hunger strikes. She studied prisoner rights inside the penal colony. Eventually, she filed a complaint against the prison authorities, resulting in the conviction of several chief officials in Mordovia’s colonies.?Tolokonnikova’s efforts brought attention to the atrocities inside the penal colonies.
