Stephen Curry just won his 4th NBA title recently against the Boston Celtics. This win puts him in elite company alongside players like LeBron James and Shaquille O’Neal, who have 4 titles as well.

While any player around the world would love to play with Curry, one player refused to play with him. Moreover, it was a big mistake as his career fell off soon after.

Curry made his big break into the NBA when the Golden State Warriors drafted him in 2009. Steph was already a college superstar, and he was hungry to continue his dominance in the league. During that time, Monta Ellis was the leader of the Warriors.

Although he was an important player for the Warriors, Monta made a huge mistake, which was a deciding factor in his promising career.

Golden State star refused to play with Stephen Curry

While it might be a dream for millions of fans and athletes around the world to play with Stephen Curry, Monta Ellis wanted no business with him. According to the then Warriors star, two small point guards could not work against the big point guards dominating the league at that time.

Safe to say, he wasn’t wrong. The Warriors struggled, and the two struggled to play together. And injuries didn’t help their cause. But the Warriors made the ultimate decision to stick with Curry and build a team around him. So Ellis was traded during the 2011-12 season despite being one of the best players on the team.

Although the fans were against the decision at the time, the front office was ultimately right. Curry became one of their best players and he formed an integral part of the ‘Big Three’.

Curry recently led the team to a fourth NBA title in 8 years. On the other hand, Monte Ellis hasn’t played since the 2016-17 season. He ended his career with an average of 17.8 points, 4.6 assists, and 3.5 rebounds.
