Spending time in prison is no easy task and the controversial WNBA star Brittney Griner has spent over 200 days in a Russian prison. The tough living conditions in prison have taken a toll on her mental and physical well-being.

Recently, the Phoenix Mercury star was on a call with her wife, Cherelle Griner and she described the call as ‘disturbing’. Moreover, Griner’s lawyer, Alexander Boikov, has also divulged some details about her living conditions.

According to Boikov, officials allow Griner to be out for only an hour every day. During this time, she takes a walk in a small courtyard situated in a penal colony outside the Russian capital Moscow. Brittney Griner shares her cell with two inmates. They are convicted of similar crimes to that of Griner and also speak English.

Although Griner speaks to her wife sometimes, it is not enough. Boikov said, “She suffers a lot without her family because she hasn’t seen them for so long and it’s very difficult to talk to them in any way.”

Due to the structure of the building, weather conditions are extreme. This is also a factor leading to declining health issues for Griner. Basic activities like showering are also a rarity. The lawyer also revealed that the detention center only ‘allowed women to shower twice a week’.

Brittney Griner is set to appear in court again

Brittney Griner and her camp are set to appear before the Russian court on the 25th of October. According to reports, the court will be entertaining pleas from Griner’s side that will decide her future.

The WNBA All-Star pleaded guilty to her crimes earlier this year. However, she asserted that she had no intention to break the law. After her confession, the court sentenced her to nine years in prison which sent the whole basketball world and beyond into a state of frenzy.
