In its illustrious 95-year history, the Academy Awards have emerged as one of Hollywood’s most polarizing award shows. Year after year, the Oscars have never failed to disappoint millions of fans with their debatable nominations and questionable winners. Though the Academy has a respected group of members to cast the ballot for the final verdict, their selections have often been a fry cry from fan favorites. Similarly, upon the release of the 2023 nominations, NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has voiced his frustrations in no uncertain terms. The Hall of Famer has never hesitated to question the status quo. Likewise, the 6x NBA champion didn’t hold back his punches while critiquing the disappointing titles nominated for the prestigious award.
The Los Angeles Lakers legend took to his popular newsletter and presented his case for the major lapses by the Academy this year. Furthermore, he also unveiled his personal list of best movies of the year, while harping on some harsh realities behind the nomination process.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is no stranger to show business. Having played in Hollywood for most of his career, the 6x MVP has witnessed his fair share of the glamourous movie world. Interestingly, the 19x All-Star has also starred in some notable titles like Bruce Lee: A Warriors Journey.?
Meanwhile, in an article on Kareem Substack, the former All-time leading scorer voiced his disappointments on this year’s nominations for the best picture of the year award. Moreover, while doing so, he harped on the harsh reality of the Oscars. He said,?”…the reality is that the Academy is an organization of people in the movie business and the Oscars are a major tool in promoting movies around the world…Voters have a financial or friendship interest in which movies win and that can affect their voting. A big-budget movie employs hundreds of members of the Academy, so its success can create more jobs. That’s the only explanation for why some of the films on the list were nominated this year.”
After ‘exposing’ the unethical interests and questionable practices of the Academy members, the Milwaukee Bucks legend revealed his problems with the nominations. However, before revealing the critical list, he gave a noteworthy disclaimer about his reasons. He explained,?“You’ll notice that my title says “disappointing movies,” not “bad movies.” Only one of the nominations was actually bad. The other three on my list weren’t bad, they were just misfires that tried to take a giant leap for moviekind, but only managed one small step before stumbling.”
