The Dallas Mavericks‘ hope of reaching the play-in tournament is hanging in the balance despite a great win against the Sacramento Kings. Kyrie Irving played a huge role in the win against the Kings and was unstoppable from beyond the arc. His performance clearly impressed a former NBA champion turned analyst, who has now urged Mavs owner Mark Cuban to re-sign Irving in the offseason, even if the team does not make the play-in. However, fans were not impressed with the advice.

The Mavericks are currently 11th in the Western Conference and are in a dogfight with the 10th-placed Oklahoma City Thunder. Both the Mavs and the Thunder have two games left in the regular season.

2008 NBA champion Kendrick Perkins wants Mark Cuban and the Dallas Mavericks to re-sign Kyrie Irving. After the Mavs’ impressive win against the third-seeded Sacramento Kings, Perkins shared his thoughts during a segment on NBA on ESPN. Perkins stated that he does not think the Mavs will make the play-in tournament.

He then noted that he wants Cuban to re-sign Irving even if the season ended in disappointment. The former Boston Celtics star added that Irving is one of the best closers in the league who almost always has a great fourth quarter when it is required.

Perkins said, “Forget it if they make the play in tournament or whatever the case may be. I don’t think they are gonna make it okay. But what I do think that after last night, and my biggest takeaway from it is that, the Dallas Mavs and Mark Cuban better do everything in their power to re-sign Kyrie Irving this offseason.”

The former center added that it was time for him to appreciate Irving for his skills on the hardwood. He argued that the eight-time NBA All-Star is very under-appreciated for his ability to close out games. Furthermore, Perkins also said that Kyrie is auditioning for the Mavs and claimed that the 2016 NBA champion has been good ever since he joined the team.

Fans are not impressed with Perkins’ advice

Kendrick Perkins’ advice to Mark Cuban did not sit well with many NBA fans. Apparently, most fans still have not forgotten Irving’s off-court controversies in the past few seasons. Here are some reactions:

Irving missed out on a lot of games in the past few seasons during his time with the Brooklyn Nets. And some fans are worried the history could repeat itself and do not want the Mavs to re-sign him.

Also, many fans argued that Irving has not made the team better. Some claimed the Mavs have been worse since his arrival. So they hoped Mark Cuban does not re-sign Kyrie. Notably, Cuban recently came under the fire from the fans for his reported comments about the departure of New York Knicks star Jalen Brunson.
