As the title suggests, the Michael Jordan led ‘Dream Team’ was the best basketball roster ever put together in the game’s history. The legacy that they created did not just include winning a gold medal but also affecting the way the sport is viewed today in the United States. And they did all of this by putting up some stellar numbers too. In fact, on this very day, exactly 30 years ago, the first 10 of its members were chosen.
These 10 included David Robinson, John Stockton, Karl Malone, Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, Chris Mullin, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and Scottie Pippen. It wasn’t until a few months later that two more stars were added to the roster. This was Clyde Drexler, who was a big surprise, as people expected it to be Isiah Thomas. And finally, Christian Laettner, who was a college star.

The reason Thomas was left out was speculated to be the rising rivalry between MJ and him. This controversy even came to life once again with Jordan’s ‘Last Dance’. The other NBA player who was shockingly not chosen was Shaquille O’Neal.

How did Michael Jordan and the squad do?
This was the first time professional players from the league were allowed to participate and be a part of the Team Men’s Basketball squad. They were led by the Late Duly, and it’s safe to say he did wonders with them.
This team went completely undefeated, taking the game over the 100-mark every time. They were so brilliant that Duly did not even need to call a single time-out, as their winning average was 44 points.
They changed the USA’s streak from not winning a gold thrice out of their five Olympic appearances to winning them seven out of eight times since then. Of course, Jordan’s popularity had much to do with the fan following they got.

In 2010, this 1992 roster was even selected for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and, in 2017, the FIBA Hall of Fame. Their talent was recognized globally, and to date these players are considered the greatest players assembled to form a team. This is why their 20-year anniversary is worth remembering.
