Cherelle Griner has recently opened up about her wife Brittney Griner’s detention. She has been working day in and day out to get her favorite person home safely. Cherelle has been Griner’s biggest support while she fights for her freedom alone in Russia. Moreover, Cherelle Griner, who has been constantly confronted for Griner’s patriotism, has shared a heartfelt message in a recent appearance on TV that could silence her critics.

Brittney Griner is trapped in Russia for over eight months. The customs officers at a Moscow Airport first detained the Phoenix Mercury center after discovering vape cartridges filled with cannabis oil in her luggage. Griner has since been sentenced to nine years in prison. Her appeal for leniency was also denied recently.

Cherelle demands support for wife Brittney Griner

Cherelle Griner recently appeared on the latest iteration of The View on November 1. She revealed how she had been dealing with another disappointing news after BG’s appeal was denied and her verdict upheld.

Cherelle stated that it was extremely hard to adjust to living without Griner every day. She deemed her wife’s sentence as ‘absurd’ and ‘disproportionate’. A student of law, Cherelle also argued that several convicted murderers in Russia had lesser sentences than Griner. She also urged Brittney Griner’s supporters to show their love by writing letters to the WNBA star during a phase of mental struggles.

Further, Cherelle Griner continued, “We should be praying that we have a country that recognizes the importance of that and are willing to actually go get our Americans and bring them back home.”

She recognized the efforts made by the State Department in the Brittney Griner saga with her recent message. Her words will come as a response to the critics who questioned Griner’s patriotism and condemned her freedom efforts by the government. Cherelle has stayed in constant communication with the Biden Administration about every development in her wife’s case.

Is prisoner swap the last hope for Griner?

During the interview, Cherelle revealed that she had no faith in the Russian legal system after BG’s appeal was denied. She felt that only the government’s efforts could bring her home now. Griner’s wife has already met with POTUS Joe Biden.

The Biden Administration has offered a prisoner swap deal for the release of Brittney Griner and US marine Paul Whelan. The White House is willing to free convicted Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout in exchange. The US Ambassadors in Russia also met with Griner recently.

However, the Kremin has not provided a public response to the offer while leaving the doors open for negotiations. Hopefully, the State Department will work out a deal and bring the WNBA star home safely.
