On the court, Shaquille O’Neal was one of the most dominant players in NBA history. His four NBA championship titles and other accomplishments established him as one of the greatest players of all time. Off the court, Shaq has established his reputation as an intelligent investor and businessman. He is undoubtedly a well-known figure all around the world. Away from the public eye too, the big man has always been an obedient son and a proud father. 

The Hall of Famer never misses an opportunity to thank and honor his parents. In numerous interviews, he has talked about discipline, and how learning from his stepfather was crucial in his career and afterward. Lucille O’Neal and Joe Toney were Shaq’s parents. Shaq was a baby when Toney left and Lucille had to care for his son on his own. Phil A. Harrison, Shaq’s stepfather, and a US army officer entered his life.

Lessons That Made Shaquille O’Neal the Best Big Man Ever

Growing up under the shadows of his stepfather, Shaq learned many lessons, the most important of which was perseverance. During his latest visit on the PBD podcast, interviewer Patrick Bet-David questioned Shaq about his father, and he quickly shared his memories. Shaq went on to quote his father and said, “one day my father pulled me and said if you listen to me, I can make you the best big man ever.”

In an interview with Brian J. Roberts, Shaquille remembers his step-father’s lessons and said “I’m not allowed to be soft. Not allowed to be soft. He would make me do pushups… That’s where the no quit comes in at. I will not quit on anything. If I can’t beat you first, guess what? We gonna go two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, till I beat you,”

Shaquille O’Neal Kept His Promise to His Father

The Lakers Legend had promised his father that he will take care of his family. And safe to say, Shaq kept his word. In an interview with Today, Lucille, Shaq’s mother, was asked what it takes to be a mother of an NBA legend. She said, “He takes good care of the family, He is setting the standard for the rest of them, and he always has.”
