Kobe Bryant was one of the greatest players of all time and arguably the greatest Laker ever. The unfortunate demise of the 18-time All-Star shocked the entire world and it still haunts people to this day. Los Angeles Lakers owner, Jeanie Buss and Bryant had a great relationship and they witnessed many amazing moments together.

Jeanie reminisced about Bryant in a tweet that many analysts and fans felt was a shot at the current players. She said Kobe always put the team’s interest over his own and called Bryant the greatest Laker ever. Amidst the drama surrounding the future of guard Russell Westbrook and the potential trade for Kyrie Irving, the tweet seemed out of place.

NFL legend Shannon Sharpe felt the same way while discussing the tweet on the show ‘Undisputed‘. He acknowledged that she had a great relationship with Kobe. He said, “There is a special place in her heart for Kobe”. Although, he felt that the tweet wasn’t just about Kobe Bryant.

Shannon said, “Just know, when you tweet something like this, I don’t know what you were trying to do, but you leave it locked for interpretation”. He said he didn’t really understand who the tweet is aimed at. It could be LeBron James, Russell Westbrook, or even Magic Johnson.

While it is easy to speculate, the tweet came at a time when reports of LeBron pushing the Lakers to go for Kyrie Irving came out. According to those reports, the Lakers are not as interested in trading for a polarizing superstar like Kyrie as James is. Maybe Buss is referring to this incident in her cryptic tweet.

Kobe Bryant once demanded a trade due to the incompetence of the front office

Shannon mentioned on the show that Kobe wasn’t perfect and he had flaws. He said, “When Kobe demanded a trade, was he doing it in the best interest of the team or in the best interest of Kobe”. He admitted that he was a big fan of Bryant but he was just stating facts.

Kobe spent the entirety of his 20-year NBA career as a part of the Los Angeles Lakers. However, he demanded a trade in 2007 after numerous incidents involving the front office. He wasn’t happy with the direction the team was moving to and wanted to be part of a team that would match his winning mentality.

Bryant’s wish was heard and the Lakers went on to make three consecutive Finals appearances and win two Championships. Maybe it is sometimes in the best interest of the team to go all out for a championship without worrying too much about the future.
