On 18th December, Joe Burrow’s Cincinnati Bengals geared up to face Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Bengals were off to a sluggish start while being down by 17 points. Despite this hiccup, the Bengals managed to bag their 6th straight win. This thriller of a game was witness to a play-gone wrong which resulted in a scintillating comeback by the Bengals. Fingers were pointed at Brady’s teammate Giovani Bernard as chaos broke loose. Amidst this chaos, Bernard saw support coming from Kevin Durant.

During the game, Tom Brady and the Bucs had a 14-point lead at one point. Following this, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers looked to execute a fake punt. However, this wasn’t successful as Giovani Bernard fumbled with the ball hitting his helmet. Many believe that this particular moment changed the course of the game. The Cincinnati Bengals orchestrated a comeback, eventually winning the game. Naturally, the failed attempt at a fake punt was the topic of discussion during the post-game sessions.

Kevin Durant stands up for Giovani Bernard

Giovani Bernard was visibly upset after the game. However, what added to his feelings of anger was an exchange with the media. Reports claim that Bernard believes that he is approached by the media only when a negative event occurs.

As per the now-viral video, reporters are heard saying, “what have you done for us to talk to you all year”? The Bucs running back was left stunned by this. However, he handled the rest of the interaction rather professionally.

Following this, Bernard saw support coming from NBA Star, Kevin Durant. The two-time champion took to Twitter to voice his opinions about the exchange between the reporters and Bernard. While stating that the Bucs star handled the interaction like a “true pro”, Durant responded to a reply on his initial tweet.

The reply commented on how the reporters were “full of themselves”.  Following this, Durant replied, “Entitlement in this world has gone to another level”. He supported this statement with a claim that the media feels entitled to behave in any way because they believed that “they are responsible for the popularity of the game”.

While reporters made their statements, a shocked Bernard said, “Can I go to my family that I have outside”?  It felt as though Bernard didn’t want to talk about the play and this interaction with the media added to his feeling of bitterness.

However, moments later, Bernard gathered himself up and spoke about the failed fake punt. He took full responsibility for the play and termed it to be a miscommunication on his end. While insisting that it was his fault, he said, “I was the one who did it. It was just me. I messed up. I messed up. Thank you, guys”.

His teammate and NFL Legend Tom Brady took some onus of the loss too. In the post-game interview, he highlighted that he too had fumbled on the field. He said, “The two fumbles were my fault. It was uncharacteristic”. Brady then stated that games cannot be won with unforced errors and silly mistakes.
