Off the court, Rodman was known for his unimaginable antics and broad-mindedness that always made him a target of criticism. Years after retirement, the Worm triggered another controversy when he became the first American star to meet the North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong-un. Back in 2020, Dennis Rodman disclosed a bizarre Kim Jong-un story to boxing legend Mike Tyson.
Dennis Rodman had made numerous trips to North Korea after his first visit in February 2013 with three other members of the Harlem Globetrotters for an exhibition game. The five-time NBA champ managed to impress Kim Jon-un with his charm and the two have remained friends ever since. Moreover, Rodman also played a key role in organizing the first-ever summit between North Korea and the United States in 2018. In his 2020 appearance on the Hotboxin’ podcast alongside co-hosts Mike Tyson, Eben Britton, and Chuck Zito, Dennis Rodman shared his experience of the exhibition game featuring the Harlem Globetrotters in front of 22,000 North Koreans and their leader Kim Jong-un. The seven-time rebounding champ stated that he could not recognize the North Korean leader when he first came to the stadium as the crowd clapped & cheered for him for 20 minutes.
After the game, Kim Jong-un invited Rodman to visit North Korea again in the future. The North Korean leader informed him about the lavish dinner and party arrangement later in the night, involving vodka, hot toddies, and karaoke. Moreover, Rodman shared, “So, I say,’ Okay great!’. So the next thing I know we go to dinner, we just assume they are shooting s**t and we’re getting drunk as s**t and stuff like that. He gets some stuff singing Karaoke, have no clue what the f**k he’s talking about.”
Rodman added, “So everybody is clapping and he has like this 18-piece women’s band. I mean these fu**ing girls are fu**ing hot, hot, you know. And the whole time they played one fu**ing song, one song. It was a fu**ing thing from Dallas.”
The two-time All-Star reckoned that he was shocked by the band playing merely a single song all night. So he gave them a list of seven songs from bands like Pearl Jam Live, Van Halen, and Rolling Stones, among others and advised them to play the songs the next time he visited North Korea. Shockingly, Rodman admitted that the North Korean people did play those songs for him during his next visit to the country.
How did Rodman manage to visit North Korea?
American media organization Vice News approached Rodman in 2013 with an opportunity to visit Pyongyang. Vice wanted to shoot a documentary and they needed Rodman to get the permission to enter North Korea. The only way the media house was able to receive the green signal was by utilizing their leader Kim Jong-un’s love for the Chicago Bulls.
