“Neither One of Us Felt Like the Marriage Should Get in the Way of Our Dating”: Dwyane Wade’s Wife Gabrielle on Her 1st Marriage That ‘Should Never Have Happened’

No matter what she may be talking about, whether anecdotes from her relationship with her children or the same with former NBA player Dwyane Wade, Gabrielle Union never holds back. Several times, she has also spoken about her past relationship and the issues she faced back then. Prior to getting married to Wade, she was with NFL player Chris Howard. The two first tied the knot back in 2001 but eventually got divorced because of some differences in 2006.

She spoke candidly about the disagreements she had during her first marriage with Howard. Furthermore, she talked about how she felt “entitled” to cheat while she was married. During her appearance on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, she covered a wide range of topics related to her past. Moreover, she mentioned the measures she took to save her relationship.

In addition, she continued, “A part of it was like keeping up with his activities, like, ‘Oh, that’s what you’re doing? You’re going to feel this one.’ And I just felt entitled to it as well.”

This is not the first time that Union has talked about the problems she had with her ex-husband, mentioning that she was “paying all the bills” in that period. Furthermore, they even attended couples counseling, but they realized they didn’t have anything in common.

Additionally, she explained how she still feels “guilty” for the past infidelity, and that both parties were responsible. “In our first marriage, neither one of us felt like the marriage should get in the way of our dating,” she explained, noting that she was not “getting wife of the year awards.”

After her divorce, Union and Wade met in 2008, and after a few years, they made their relationship public in 2010, subsequently tying the knot. Currently, she has a 4-year-old daughter, Kaavia, and is a stepmother to Wade’s three children.
