The Los Angeles Lakers lost more than they gained from last year’s off-season. As it turned out, they were arguably a better unit in 2019-20 than they were in the latest season. So in order to get back to the title-contending conversations, Rob Pelinka and Jeanie Buss must make very calculative moves going ahead.
As a bone stuck in the Lakers’ throat, Dennis Schroder and the deal around him is one big concern. The 27-YO is all set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer and his fate in LA is still unclear. But now, there’s a major development in this direction that can help everyone in speculating what might happen.

Dennis Schroder might not get to wear the Lakers jersey in 2021-22
As per American sportswriter and NBA analyst, Marc Stein, the Lakers and Dennis Schroder are not on the same page. At one hand, Dennis the Menace is not ready to let his guards down in terms of monetary expectations. On the other hand, the Lake Show does not see him as a long-term solution for the Point Guard position.
As per Marc, “The easiest thing would be re-signing Dennis Schröder, but Dennis Schröder wants crazy money. Dennis Schröder thinks he’s a $100 million player. He’s already turned down an extension in the $80 millions, and the vibe from the Lakers really is, they’d rather move on from Schröder. I don’t think they see Schröder as a starter. I think they like him as a Sixth Man, but they want something more out of their main backcourt guy.”

In fact, a report had earlier suggested that the 27-YO wants a $100m-$120m contract and that’s too much for the Lakers to shell out. So even as he was seen working out with AD some three weeks ago, it is unlikely that he will stay unless a bargain kicks in.
Why does his resigning not make sense?
Notably, the German started all his regular season games after two years in his career but did not produce much. Everyone saw how Dennis Schroder went scoreless (0/9) in the Lakers Game 5 against the Suns. Playing without Anthony Davis, the Lake Show desperately wanted his assistance but a failure from him led to a 30-point blowout loss.
His regular season was equally poor as he missed 11 games because of injury. And in the 61 games that he played, the star guard averaged 15.4 points, way less than his contribution to the Thunder a year prior to that.

Also, his three-point shooting struggled as the star attempted his five-year low 3.5 shots per game and converted just 33.5%. A Danny Green would have been a better shooter than him any given day and that is where the Lakers don’t see his value. Sure, Dennis is insanely quick and his ability to cut through elite defense is exceptional, but he could show none of that to demand huge cash.
