Breaking out as a star in the NBA is no easy task. However, if one achieves the herculean task of being one of the best players in the world and making it into the NBA, it is taken for granted that they will be paid handsomely. Interestingly enough, this confidence was the reason why an NBA legend who trash-talked Kobe Bryant ended up broke.

The former NBA star in question is none other than Gilbert Arenas. He took out a $400,000 loan months before the NBA draft. Although he was bound to be one of the highest picks in the draft, Arenas’ mistakes cost him.

Arenas messed up big time in the pre-drafts which caused him to not enter the draft as a top ten pick. Moreover, the money he had taken on loan had all gone into luxuries. He was in big trouble.

He was picked in the second round of the draft by the Golden State Warriors and signed to $330,000 per year. This was lesser than the money he had taken on loan. Needless to say, Gilbert’s recklessness was the biggest reason why he was broke.

Interestingly enough, as he did not have money to drive back and forth to the arena, he decided to spend the nights there sometimes. “I was basically homeless“, said Arenas.

Gilbert Arenas regretted trash-talking Kobe Bryant

One of the highlights of Gilbert Arenas’ career is his 60-point game against the Los Angeles Lakers. Arenas helped the Washington Wizards get the better of Kobe Bryant and the Lakers in 2006.

However, trash-talking with Kobe after the game was a major mistake. Brendan Haywood, former NBA star said, “He tells Kobe, ‘If you the Black Mamba, then my new nickname is the Black Mongoose.”
