Charles Barkley has often indulged in squabbles with his Inside the NBA co-host Shaquille O’Neal on national television. In those instances, the 59-year-old NBA veteran almost always seems calm and collected, unlike his Hall-of-Famer counterpart. However, Charles Barkley lacked his current composure during the early years of his career.

In other words, the Hall-of-Famer often got entangled in fights and squabbles with players of the opposing team. Such scuffles would frequently lead to suspensions and fines. But Barkley didn’t care.

In 1990, Charles Barkley would spit at some Philadelphia 76ers fans at Madison Square Garden after a physical altercation with New York Knicks star Patrick Ewing. The same year, the 11-time All-Star would receive a one-game suspension and a $20,000 fine following a brutal brawl with Detroit Pistons center Bill Laimbeer.

A 1990 clash between the Philadelphia 76ers and the New York Knicks didn’t take much time to heat up after Hall-of-Famers Patrick Ewing and Charles Barkley got involved in a tussle at Madison Square Garden. As it turns out, Barkley had shoved Ewing to the ground after a play in the very first quarter of the game.

The altercation caused a commotion between the teams and riled up the fans. A few minutes before the half-time interval, Barkley once again would take part in a dispute. This time with fans of his own team.

In other words, the 1993 MVP ended up in a heated exchange with 76ers fans sitting close to the road team’s bench. Subsequently, Barkley threw an ice tray towards the fans, according to an eye-witness. Afterwards, he also spat in the fans’ direction.

However, this is by no means Barkley’s only public row that year. In fact, he incurred a fine of $20,000 after a violent brawl with Pistons center Bill Laimbeer. The confrontation led to a violent skirmish between multiple players of both teams.

At the end of it all, the NBA collected a whopping $162,500 in penalties.

After one year in 1991, Charles Barkley would once again spit on a fan. However, this time the victim would turn out to be a little girl.

As it turns out, a fan had been hurling profanities at Barkley for a long time. Therefore, the 11-time All-Star would spit towards him but miss completely.

After many such incidents, Barkley would finally engage in introspection regarding his shortness of temper. Perhaps, one could ascribe the current calmness of his demeanor to his deep introspection in the past to remedy his issues.
