NBA all-time great Larry Bird is one of the most influential players in the league. Over the course of his illustrious career, Bird has won three NBA titles, two finals MVP awards, and three regular season MVP awards. He famously won the Rookie of the Year award over another all-time great Magic Johnson. This added fuel to one of the fiercest rivalries in the league’s history between the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers. Bird and Magic pushed each other to be better which helped them both become great.

Larry Bird comes from a very humble beginning in French Lick, Indiana. When he was in high school, his parents divorced. And a year later, his father committed suicide. Bird spent long hours on the basketball court as an escape from troubles at home. He soon became one of the best high school players in the country and later on played for Indiana State University.

Bird initially found it hard to adjust to life in school coming from a small town and dropped out. He then joined school again the next year and led them to their first-ever NCAA tournament.

The Celtics drafted Larry Bird as the sixth overall pick in the 1978 NBA draft. But he decided to finish his college education and joined them in 1979. He then went on to become one of the superstars in the NBA. The talented forward was way ahead of his time in terms of basketball skills. However, perhaps not so much in terms of fashion. The Celtics already had 13 titles to their name when Bird joined them. They were the most successful team in the history of the NBA at the time. The Lakers, on the other hand, had won six titles at the time. However, they were on the rise after legendary owner the late Jerry Buss took over.

The Lakers drafted Magic Johnson as the first pick in the 1979 NBA draft. He hit the ground running with superstar Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. However, Bird won the Rookie of the Year award which added more to their rivalry. Over the course of their careers, Magic and Bird have had some immense battles on the court. However, the two remain very close friends.
