NBA legend Dennis Rodman has been one of the most controversial figures in the basketball world. Ever since his final years with the Detroit Pistons, Rodman has been making headlines for his off-the-court antics. Over the years, he has received a huge amount of backlash for many of his actions. He had to take the brunt of it all. However, some of these have become very common now.

Even though Dennis Rodman received a lot of backlash for his fashion and antics, many fans loved him for what he was. So he had a huge spotlight wherever he went. With this immense popularity, The Worm landed many opportunities in the entertainment world. In 1997, the Chicago Bulls legend made the cover of the GQ magazine with model Rebecca Romijn. Rodman and Rebecca were almost naked, and it appeared as if Rodman was grabbing the model’s breasts. The cover received huge backlash even though the Newsstand version of the magazine did not feature the same cover.
The Newsstand version featured a cover of Romijn in a bikini in front of the five-time NBA champion. GQ magazine was aware that there will be problems with magazine distribution. So 300,000 copies were made for the Newsstands and a reported 425,000 copies of almost naked Rodman Rebecca were made for the subscribers.

Furthermore, this was a parody of Michael Jackson’s sister’s controversial cover. According to a report from the Washington Post in 1997, “The too-hot-for-newsstands edition of GQ is actually a parody of sorts of another controversial cover, Rolling Stone’s 1993 shot of singer Janet Jackson. In that cover, Jackson’s bare breasts are covered by her boyfriend’s disembodied hands.”
Rodman paved the way for many
Dennis Rodman is arguably one of the most influential figures when it comes to fashion and self-expression in the basketball world. Like many pop culture icons, Rodman was way ahead of his time and it is safe to say he was misunderstood. Even though his almost naked GQ cover received some flack, it led the way to modern athletes like Dwyane Wade, Kevin Love, John Wall, Karl-Anthony Towns, Brittney Griner, and so forth to showcase their bodies and express themselves freely.
