NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal believes in gathering all the facts before giving his opinion. At least that’s what his comments on the Bubba Wallace controversy indicated. The NASCAR driver got involved in a huge controversy back in 2020. On June 21 2020, a crew found a noose hanging from the ceiling of Wallace’s assigned garage. It didn’t take long to reach the assumption for many, especially with the sensitive racial atmosphere at that time, that Wallace was being subjected to a hate crime.

The noose was found by one of Wallace’s staff in an area where unauthorized entry was restricted due to COVID. After the discovery of the noose, the speculations of hate-crime spread like a wild fire. Consequently, NASCAR drivers and crews stepped forth to support Bubba Wallace. On June 22, the crowd walked along with Wallace in solidarity during the Cup Series game held at Talladega. The FBI was roped in to investigate the matter. Additionally, NASCAR president Steve Phelps condemned the act and promised that the ‘guilty party’ would be banned from the sport as a punishment.

Wallace commented that the act was a “painful reminder of how much further we have to go as a society and how persistent we must be in the fight against racism.”

However, as the investigation progressed, the FBI concluded that Wallace was not subjected to any kind of hate crime.

Shaquille O’Neal once sounded off on the Bubba Wallace controversy

Just about three days after the incident occurred, the FBI announced that it was not a hate crime of any sort. In fact, the noose had been in there for a long period of time. According to the Bureau, the noose was in the garage since the fall 2019. Following that, NASCAR released a statement to relay the investigation results and thank the FBI for their help.

“The FBI report concludes, and photographic evidence confirms, that the garage door pull rope fashioned like a noose had been positioned there since as early as last fall,” NASCAR wrote.

As the outcome was revealed, Shaquille O’Neal gave his thoughts on the matter. In an episode of the Big Podcast with Shaq, the NBA legend expressed his shock on the Bubba Wallace situation.

“My thought was it was messed up. Why would somebody do that?” replied Shaq when his co-host asked what his initial reaction was.

However, Shaq stated that he preferred to look at a case through every angle before reaching a conclusion. Shaq’s method sounds about right given that the initial assumption was proved to be completely wrong by the FBI.
