Many feared NBA legend Michael Jordan because of his ability to embarrass his opponents if he wanted to. So a lot of players just wanted to do their job without getting in Jordan’s way. Interestingly, some opponents did not want to see him in the eye. However, there were some who did not back down and challenged the six-time NBA champion. Players like Isiah Thomas, Gary Payton, Patrick Ewing, and Kobe Bryant among others, were not ready to bow down to MJ and fought back.

Among these players, Gary Payton has a very special place because of his display in the NBA Finals against Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. The Seattle Supersonics legend was one of the best defensive guards ever and he locked down MJ on multiple occasions.

Gary Payton on his father’s influence

Gary Payton recently sat down with host Bubba Dub for the ‘Trashh Talk’ show by Breakbeat Media. During the interview, Payton talked about a variety of things including his career, his personal life, etc. At the beginning of the show, the host asked which current NBA player reminded Payton of himself. The 2006 NBA champion stated that he did not see anyone like him. He was then asked about his competitive mindset and Payton replied that he did not have a friendly relationship with his opponents like the current generation.

The host then asked who influenced him when he was growing up. The nine-time NBA All-Star said that his father was a major influence growing up. He stated that his father always advised him to stay strong and not back down from anyone. He then recounted an interesting incident from his childhood. Payton said, “One day man when I went home, one of the bullies on the block was trying to get at me right. My daddy locked the door, he said, ‘Don’t bring your a** in here until you get down with him on the lawn.'”

The 1996 DPOY added that he fought and knocked down the bully and then he became the “big bully” on the block. The host was astonished to hear this from the legendary point guard. Payton noted that was how his father was and that was how he grew up. The same toughness can be seen in Payton’s son, Gary Payton II.

Gary Payton II returns to the Warriors

Gary Payton II recently returned to the Golden State Warriors after an unsuccessful stint with the Portland Trail Blazers. Payton II was an integral part of the Warriors’ title-winning run last year. However, he departed after getting a lucrative contract offer from the Blazers.

While talking about players that resembled him, even though Gary Payton said that he did not see anyone like him, he noted his son, only in terms of defense, came close.
