Mother Sonya, Who Even Fined Son Stephen Curry for Number of Turnovers, Forced Him to Give Second Thoughts to Dunks: “If You Try That One More Time…”

Stephen Curry is a global superstar with a devoted fan following on social media. This wouldn’t have been possible if he wasn’t arguably the greatest shooter of the ball in this era. His three-point shooting is near-perfectly accurate and he rarely seems to miss. He broke Ray Allen’s record of having the most three points made very recently.

Curry has now scored over 3,000 shots beyond the arc. But have you ever seen Curry dunk? He’s a combo guard so his role usually does not allow him to score inside the paint. Nonetheless, he has given the audience some glimpses of that ability but it remains a rare sight.

His mother is a big reason why. Sonya Curry told him to change his dunking style and gave him second thoughts about it. During their podcast, Sonya and Steph’s father Dell talked about how they brought up their children. She revealed that she stopped asking Stephen for money as he brought his TO percentage down. Earlier, whenever he committed excessive turnovers, Curry had to give some share of his money to Sonya.

She said, “This year, I threatened to fine him for missed dunks. I was like if you try that one more time, it is driving me crazy.” Sonya revealed that she asked Stephen to give over fines for turnovers so that he stops doing extra stuff when he gets bored and looks bad. Steph’s father and former NBA player Dell Curry said that he used to turn over the ball because he wasn’t allowed to give fancy passes and do “hotdog” plays. Dell said they always ensured Curry was trained to play the “right way”.

Stephen Curry: Born out of his injuries and shortcomings

Once he came to the NBA, he became free to do those. Hence, Stephen Curry turned out to be the player we know today in the NBA. He has won four NBA titles and became the centerpiece of the Golden State Warriors dynasty. Along with those titles, he has won two regular-season MVPs and a Finals MVP. He is also a two-time scoring champion and is part of the 50-40-90 club.

Dell revealed that Curry was considered frail by scouts who saw him in college. He was also?racked with injuries during his earlier years. There was some doubt whether he would even have a substantial career in the NBA but now all those have been answered.
