Recently, NBC?s TODAY SHOW invited the mother of one of the most dominant scorers the league has ever seen, a four-time NBA champion and three-time Finals MVP, a one-time league?s MVP, and a Hall of Famer – Shaquille O?Neal.

Lucille O?Neal, sat down with Sheinelle Jones to share her journey from a struggling young mom of four to the force behind an NBA athlete. She told Sheinelle Jones about the strict four-word condition that her children had to follow to play basketball.

While discussing her journey, Sheinelle Jones asked Lucille O’Neal, ?how are you with all your kids on grades and academics? Lucille O?Neal instantly replied ? No pass no play.?

To Lucille O?Neal, grades were of the utmost importance because she wanted all of her kids to have a college degree. Her kids knew they would not be allowed to participate in extracurriculars if they didn’t keep their grades up acceptably.??

How did Shaquille O?Neal do in college?

Shaquille O?Neal played his college basketball for LSU and after three years he wanted to go to the next level and appear in the NBA draft. He told his mother about it. Lucille O?Neal was not happy as she wanted her son to stay and graduate but Shaquille somehow convinced her and promised her that he will go back and complete his bachelor’s.

After that, he was drafted by the Orlando Magic with the first overall pick in 1992. Shaq kept his promise and went back to get a bachelor’s degree and an MBA from LSU later in his career.?

Lucille O’Neal also talked about the time when Shaq told her that he is going to be a professional basketball player. She said she encouraged him and told him that he has to follow the process and start by playing for his high school team first, then for his college team. And then get drafted by the NBA.

Shaq’s mother told him to practice continuously so he can climb up in the rankings. She is proud that her son did it all and now is one of the greatest basketball players of all time.?
