The Golden State Warriors drafted Stephen Curry in 2009. Curry’s first few seasons in the NBA had very few signs of a star in the making. The 6’2” point guard was a sniper and could shoot from anywhere on the court, but his play was heavily criticized due to his lack of defense and size. Moreover, he was plagued with injuries. All the above factors played a significant role in his contract negotiations following his 3rd season in the league.

Stephen Curry signed a massively undervalued contract worth $44 Million

After his 3rd season in the NBA, where he was sidelined for most of the games due to an ankle injury, he missed over 50 games in the 2011-12 season. By that point, Curry had shown promise as a shooter, but his future potential was still uncertain to many fans and management alike.

After negotiations, Curry would sign a contract extension worth $44 Million for four years which now looks massively undervalued in hindsight. On an appearance on the Draymond Green podcast, Curry revealed his thoughts at the time of signing the contract. He said he established a mindset regarding money and how to approach such matters. Curry claimed that the career of his father gave him a fresh perspective. His $44 Million extension was more money than his father, Dell Curry, ever made playing 16 years in the league. “Let’s keep perspective here: $44 million over four years. More money than my pops had ever made in the league, because I had been around the league for 16 years watching my dad play,”?Curry found himself content and grateful with the contract, thus focusing his time and energy on his game than thinking about his choices.

Curry’s contract played a vital role in the dynasty that followed in the bay area. After signing the extension, Curry had a breakout year, rapidly climbing the league ranks to become a superstar point guard. He won back-to-back League MVPs and made multiple All-NBA and All-Star teams.

Because their MVP point guard was making $11 Million a year, the Warriors could sign and retain key players like Klay Thompson and Draymond Green and build a championship roster around Curry. In 2017, they had enough room in the cap to sign the MVP forward Kevin Durant to their roster. This helped them further strengthening the team. The Warriors had a historic run; they made the NBA finals for five straight seasons, winning three titles. In the 2015-16 season, they won 73 games, breaking the record of the 96′ Chicago Bulls, which had stood for over 15 years.

After Kevin Durant left the Warriors, the team suffered for two years due to injuries and a lack of talent. But the Warriors would find success again; acquisition of key players combined with an excellent draft, the team was back in title contention.
