Charles Barkley once advised rookies to never give their money to family and friends. However, Barkley himself learned that lesson the hard way. He recently revealed how he was astonished listening to his mother’s wealthy habits. If fact, there was a time when Charcey Glenn, Barkley’s mother couldn’t live on $2 million a year.

In a recent interview on SiriusXM, Barkley revealed how he used to pay his mom. He was paying his mother $50,000 a year, which was the highest in Leeds, Alabama, where she lived. However, Charcey Glenn recalls that the associates working for Barkley would ask for extra money each month.

Listening to the demands of his mother, Barkley was utterly shocked. He said to his mother, “Mom, what the hell are you doing?” He also paid any and all house bills. However, it was seemingly not enough for his mother.

The wealthy habits of Chracey Glenn continued. In 2002, Barkley said to Jim Gray that his mother couldn’t live on $2 million a year now. Further revealing that his mother would ask him for more every year. He apparently said to his mother, “I built you a house, you’ve two cars, can you not survive on 50-60 grand a year?” Barkley’s mother sardonically replied, “I got to spend money, I’m Charles Barkley’s mother.”

Charles Barkley, who has a net worth of $60 million, once advised rookies that they should never give their money to family and friends. “The first thing you do is learn how to save your money ’cause your family and friends are the worst people to spend your money.” said the 11-time NBA All-Star.  “Sixty to 70 percent of professional athletes go broke,” he added.

Barkley advised that rookies should clearly state “I do not owe you anything. If I want to do something for family, I’ll do it.” However, this may be one of the key reasons why Barkley has lost most of his old friends and family.
