Michael Jordan is arguably one of the main reasons behind some of the game’s all-time legends not winning a ring. MJ and the Chicago Bulls dominated the 1990s and didn’t allow other teams a sniff at the title during their reign. Legends like Karl Malone, John Stockton, Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley, etc couldn’t win a championship during Jordan’s dominance.

Michael Jordan won six NBA titles with the Bulls from 1991 to 1998. After the first three-peat, MJ decided to take a break from basketball and pursued baseball. He came back after a season, however, the Bulls didn’t reach the Finals in his first season back.

Fans clearly loved the iconic look of Jordan and Ewing, from their sneakers to the powerful center’s jewelry. The photo was taken during the 1991 All-Star practice. Charles Barkley won the All-Star MVP award that year.

The absence of Michael Jordan

During Jordan’s one-year absence and his first season back, Hakeem Olajuwon and the Houston Rockets won the title back to back. And in the 1994 NBA Finals, the Rockets faced Patrick Ewing and the New York Knicks. It was the battle of two of the best centers in the NBA. And they went toe-to-toe throughout the series.

However, there was no answer for ‘The Dream’ as he led both teams in scoring every game of the Finals. He averaged 26.9 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 3.9 blocks per game. Olajuwon helped the Rockets win the title 4-3. And he rightfully won the finals MVP award as well.

For the New York Knicks, Ewing averaged 18.9 points, 12.4 rebounds, and 4.3 blocks per game and helped his team stay in the series. But it wasn’t enough unfortunately for the Knicks faithful.

Then in the 1995 NBA Finals, the Rockets again reached the finals, however, this time it was against the Orlando Magic. The young and energetic Magic were led by another young dominant center, Shaquille O’Neal. Ever since his entry into the league, Shaq had been a revelation as he destroyed teams left, right, and center. Furthermore, O’Neal and the Magic had just beaten Michael Jordan and the Bulls on their way to the Finals.

However, Olajuwon and the Rockets battered the young Magic team and swept the Finals. A 32-year-old Olajuwon averaged 32.8 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game against O’Neal. And he once again won the Finals MVP award.

But Olajuwon’s titles have arguably not been given enough credit because of what Michael Jordan did in his first full season back. He again led the Chicago Bulls to a three-peat and dominated the league.
