Magic Johnson sat down with the Hall of Fame tight end Shannon Sharpe on the ‘Club Shay Shay’ podcast to discuss various topics from his personal life, the NBA, business, and more.
In one of the segments, when asked about ever owning an NBA team, Johnson replied in the affirmative, but only when the time was right. Johnson also revealed that he had received offers from four different NBA teams asking him to be a part-owner. But Johnson had declined them all because of his love for the team he played for; the Los Angeles Lakers.?
Johnson confessed that the owners of the Golden State Warriors, Peter Gruber and Joe Lacob, invited him for lunch and pitched to him. They wanted Johnson to be a partner by becoming a part-owner of the Golden State Warriors. But Johnson rejected their offer because of his loyalty to the Lakers. “I just couldn’t do it, I am a Laker.” Johnson’s words indicated his sense of guilt and betrayal toward his team when the opportunity of investing in another franchise presented itself.

The Los Angeles Lakers and Dr. Jerry Buss drafted Ervin Magic Johnson in the 1979 NBA draft as the #1 overall pick in round one. Coming into the NBA, Johnson was the most sought-after prospect.
