Charles Barkley was one of the fiercest athletes on the court during his playing days. However, just like every other sportsperson, he struggled quite a bit with weight gain after his retirement. After his retirement at the turn of the century, Barkley wasn’t working out as often as he used to. Hence, the calorie deficit plan implemented during his NBA days wasn’t working out as planned. Fast forward to 2023, after numerous surgeries, the Philadelphia 76ers legend decided to make a huge investment to help others just like him.
The 11-time All-Star’s agility on the court in the ’90s was undeniable. However, it is no secret that it can be incredibly difficult to maintain such a physique as father-time comes knocking on the door. Hence, it doesn’t come as a surprise that Barkley would want to help others with the same cause.

During his initial days in the NBA, Barkley was unapologetically called “fat” by his hero, Moses Malone. Understandably, the Philadelphia 76ers legend was hurt by the comment and wanted to work harder on himself. However, years later, after he retired, the ghosts of his past came back to haunt him.?
In his recent appearance on a podcast, Barkley revealed how he had to go through multiple hip surgeries for his massive weight gain. Following that, his doctor strongly suggested that he get back in shape to avoid any further health issues. Needless to say, the 76ers legend has been through his fair share of struggles with losing weight.?
Hence, he recently took a huge plunge to help people facing similar issues. In a recent episode of Shark Tank, the 1993 NBA MVP invested a significant amount of money in a company that provides a healthy alternative to sugary drinks, Cave Shake. The drink is a dairy-free product aimed at daily use customers, as well as athletes who want a cheat meal that doesn’t harm their bodies.
Barkley saw great potential in the product, and after a short negotiation, he ended up acquiring 20% of the company for $250,000. The original ask was for $250,000 for 10% of the company, but the Chuckster’s charm convinced the company’s founders to follow his route.

When questioned by fellow Shark Kevin O’Leary about his interest in the product, Barkley answered. “I’ve struggled with my weight since I retired.” He added, “I would like to be involved with a product that helped people lose weight.”
Although the $250,000 is chump change for the $70 Million worth NBA legend, his heart is certainly in the right place. Moreover, it isn’t the first time that Barkley has spent a considerable amount of money on the right causes. His famous Million-dollar donations to colleges in Alabama and Atlanta in the past few years have caught the eye of many.
