The Last Dance is arguably one of the finest sports documentaries. The cameras followed the most iconic dynasty of the 1990s, the Chicago Bulls. Just when fans thought the legend of Michael Jordan didn’t have more to write, the 10-part docuseries changed the narrative yet again. It displayed His Airness in his true element. A competitive assassin who knew nothing but winning. However, while he was showered with love from the audience, Jordan’s relationships took quite a toll. The most notable one was with teammate, Scottie Pippen.
Pippen was probably the most important come-up in the illustrious journey of Jordan. The six-time champion was always individually dominant. However, he never won until Pippen matured his game completely. The duo successfully achieved two three-peats together, a feat considered one of the toughest in basketball.

Their connection on the court was as smooth as silk. However, the release of the Last Dance damaged any relationship they had outside the court. Notably, Scottie Pippen was hurt by his depiction in the docuseries. Moreover, he thought the focus was more on Jordan rather than the Chicago Bulls. Hence, he went on a rampage against his former teammate. The Hall of Famer wrote his own memoir claiming MJ made $10 million from his role in the series.
Scottie Pippen exposes Michael Jordan?
Pippen was heavily upset with the focus of the Last Dance. Hence, he wanted to be the pillar for his teammates. The eight-time All-Defensive forward wanted to represent the Chicago Bulls. And he did so by writing his own memoir ‘Unguarded’. While it dived into the final season, Pippen also unleashed a few shots at his five-time MVP teammate. One of his claims was that Michael Jordan made $10 million from the Netflix series. On the other hand, him and his other teammates’ involvement wasn’t rewarded at all.
Pippen wrote: “He relied on the success we attained as a team?six titles in eight years?to propel him to a level of fame throughout the world no other athlete, except for Muhammad Ali, has reached in modern times. To make things worse, Michael received $10 million for his role in the doc while my teammates and I didn?t earn a dime, another reminder of the pecking order from the old days.”

In reality, His Airness had a $4 million payday from the Last Dance. However, he didn’t put anything into his bank account. The ten-time scoring champion used the funds to contribute to a noble cause. Adding to his rich history of donations, Jordan donated his entire purse to charitable causes. Hence, Scottie Pippen’s $10 million claim was never the correct information.
It was a shame to see such a formidable duo break into pieces from one documentary. Both sides probably have their reasons to be upset. Moreover, their relationship might never be repaired. The only memories that basketball fans will remember is their emphatic partnership during the six championship runs.
