Apart from dominating the NBA for over a decade with the Chicago Bulls, Michael Jordan also managed to build an empire worth a fortune. The Hall of Famer, who lived in Chicago for most of his career, once built a luxurious estate from scratch worth millions on the outskirts of the city in 1995. But fast forward to today, Jordan’s Highland Park estate is yet to be sold despite being on the market since 2012.

Though the 56,000 sq-ft mansion is yet to find a suitor, it boasts world-class luxury and rare collections of the 6x NBA champion from over the years. Among many such features of the house, it also has a rare piece of art nearly 50 years old.

After winning the first championship (1991) of his Hall of Fame career, His Airness purchased a plot in the Highland Park community on the outskirts of the Windy City for an estimated $2 Million. Consequently, after four years of construction, the Chicago Bulls legend took ownership of the mansion in 1995 and lived there for 19 years before putting it up for sale in 2012.

The mansion boasts nine bedrooms and 19 bathrooms with world-class luxury features. However, what stands out is a rare piece of art nearly 50 years old on the upstairs lounge of the mansion. According to an Insider report, the piece of art in question here is a set of doors from the original Playboy mansion from 1974. The dark, rounded, and rare works of art welcome the guests into the billiards/pool room.

Playboy magazine’s founder Hugh Hefner established the iconic original Playboy mansion in Chicago in 1959. Though it is unclear when these doors became a part of Jordan’s mansion, they welcomed people into the Playboy mansion till 1974. Subsequently, Hefner shifted the Playboy mansion to Los Angeles and donated the original to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Apart from rare works of art for doors, the mansion has several other exclusive features. They include a cigar room, a full-sized NBA court with the Jordan branding, an infinity pool with an island, a dining table inspired by the streets of Baghdad, and the most defining feature of the estate, the iconic jersey number #23 embedded on the front gates. All the above features and more make MJ’s mansion one of a kind. However, they also might be the root cause behind why it remains unsold for over a decade.

Michael Jordan’s mansion has been on the market for over 10 years

After calling it home for almost two decades, Jordan put his Highland Park mansion for sale in 2012 with an asking price of $29 million. But it has yet to find a buyer. Many real estate experts believe that the root cause behind the tepid demand is the extreme customization of the mansion.

Moreover, it also sits on the outskirts of Chicago in an expensive community. Incidentally, Jordan’s asking price in 2012 was 51 times the median house price in Chicago. It also commands an annual property bill of $100,000.

Thus, after over a decade on the market, the billionaire revised the asking price to $14,855,000. Surprisingly, the numbers in the revised asking price add up to 23, the iconic jersey number of MJ.
