6x NBA champion and Hall of Famer Michael Jordan dominated the NBA in the 80s and 90s. Many fans consider Jordan to be the greatest player of all time. Jordan was one of the most sought prospects coming into the NBA. After high school, Jordan enrolled in the University of North Carolina and played alongside James Worthy and Sam Perkins for the Carolina Tar Heels.

The Chicago Bulls drafted Michael Jordan in the 1984 NBA draft. Jordan played with the Bulls for over a decade and had one of the greatest careers in the league’s history.

Before getting drafted by the Bulls, Jordan played for the University of North Carolina. He played under the legendary coach Dean Smith and then assistant coach Roy Williams for the Tar Heels, the basketball team of UNC.

Michael Jordan and Coach Roy Williams shared a special bond

Michael Jordan’s father, the late James R. Jordan, was instrumental in deciding where Jordan went to college. The then assistant coach of the Tar Heels, Roy Williams, frequently came to Jordan’s high school games. Coach Williams and Jordan’s father became close during that time, and their relationship played a significant role in Jordan’s future destination. Unsurprisingly, Jordan joined the Tar Heels after high school.

In an interview from several years ago, Jordan revealed that his father once made a special gift for Coach Williams that further strengthened their bond. Jordan said,?“At the time, my father was more or less a Handyman type of guy, he created these heaters, and he made one for coach Williams, and from that bond, they connected.” Jordan’s father had gifted a handmade heater to coach Williams. Jordan claimed that the bond between coach Williams and his father helped him better connect with the coach.?

During his time at UNC, Jordan and Williams became close. Besides the daily activities on the court, Williams and Jordan often played pool and golf in their free time. Jordan, in the interview, revealed that Williams once beat him in a game of pool.

The 6x NBA champion sang high praise of coach William’s competitive spirit. Coach Willims was uber-competitive, making him one of the greatest college coaches of all time. Coach Williams played a major role in the development of Jordan as a basketball player and a fierce competitor.?

Michael Jordan had a dominant college career. Jordan played for three years with the Tar Heels and won an NCAA championship in 1982 after hitting a game-winning shot against future Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing. He also made the NCAA AP All-American first team for two straight seasons in 1983 and 1984. Jordan averaged 17.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in the three seasons with the Tar Heels. Jordan got drafted by the Bulls in 1984 before completing his degree. Thus, he returned to UNC in 1986 to get his degree.
