The legend of ‘Michael Jordan the bonafide winner’ has only grown after his recent masterstroke. Notably, the former Chicago Bulls guard finally sold his majority stake in the Charlotte Hornets this week. And the sale boosted his extortionate net worth, doubling the $2 billion net worth he has had. It seems anything relatively connected to basketball is bound to be part of Jordan’s playground. But what if we told you there was a time when being an athlete was only a pipe dream for the legend?

As a youngster, the six-time champion wasn’t the same icon, brimming with confidence. His father often described him as ‘lazy’, at least in terms of academics. When his athletic dreams seemed bleak, his mother, Deloris Jordan, had to discover her son’s hidden talents.

The book Michael Jordan: My Life, takes readers on MJ’s journey, from being a self-doubting child to the esteemed figure he is today. It was in ninth grade that the dream of being a professional athlete consumed His Airness. As a student, Michael Jordan was decent, but nothing special. In fact, the book states he was a ‘lazy’ child, refusing to do any chores on his own. Jordan would often be financially broke because he paid his friends to do his work. Yet, with sports, his work ethic takes a 180 transformation. That’s where Jordan’s heart lay.

An avid baseball, basketball, and football fan, Jordan worked hard to keep his dream alive. However, it left his parents to worry about his future. In ninth grade, the vision of him being an athlete dimmed. Despite the struggles, Michael Jordan only aimed at chasing the sports grounds.

In these desperate times, Deloris Jordan prompted her son to take home economic courses. Understanding his personality, “he didn’t seem to be the kind of guy who could easily attract a mate.” She pursued Jordan to get an education and to work around the house.

MJ could have been a baker

Instead of defying her, the five-time MVP enrolled in various courses. With the courses, he finally found his calling. “I remember he baked a cake in school that was so good we couldn’t believe it. We had to call his teacher to verify it,” said Deloris Jordan.

His one anchor to happiness was having a basketball in his hand and squeezing out every ounce of his effort on the court. So, he chased the vision. The consequence? The infamous tale of him being ‘cut’ from the varsity team.
