Tennis great, Serena Williams recently won the NAACP’s prestigious ‘Jackie Robinson Sports Award’ which honors athletes who have ‘promoted social justice through creative endeavors’. Williams became the fourth female recipient of the award. The first-ever winner was Olympic sprinter Wilma Rudolph, who won it in 1988. She also became the 10th athlete to receive the award after Michael Jordan and LeBron James.

The last athlete to be honored with the award was Stephen Curry, who won it alongside the WNBPA in 2021. During her acceptance speech, Williams said, “I’m incredibly humbled to be amongst some of the greatest names in today’s culture, celebrating those who promote equity through creative endeavors. Together, we are a team of trailblazers, and we represent what is possible, when you truly believe in yourself, and your potential, and follow your life and passion.
