NBA superstar LeBron James is often compared with Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson because of his style of play. Despite their size, both James and Johnson could run the offense. Also, the two are pass-first players who would be always on the lookout for open teammates. Furthermore, some of James’ flashy passes have also led him to be compared with Magic. Also, James is a huge fan of the five-time champion as well. So when Johnson came calling, it was one more reason for James to join the Lakers.
Magic Johnson took over as the president of basketball operations at the Lakers in 2017. He helped the team land the four-time champion in 2018. However, Magic then resigned in 2019 before the Lakers won the title in 2020. Interestingly, in 2021, he hinted at a reunion with James.

During an interview with The New York Times in 2021, Magic Johnson answered questions on business, basketball, etc. In one instance, he was asked about running an NBA team again. Johnson replied that he might be open if the situation and timing were right. He then added it also comes down to the team and suggested he might end up working with Jeanie Buss and the Lakers because he is still a Laker.
Johnson said, “It’s all about the right situation, so if the right situation comes I might think about it. It’s all about timing. It’s all about who that team is. I’m a Laker all day long, so I’m probably going to end up working with Jeanie Buss again, and I’m not laughing. That’s serious.”

The three-time MVP sold his 4.5 percent share of the Lakers to a lifelong Lakers fan in 2010. Magic admitted it was a “bittersweet business decision.” At the time, reports suggested Johnson sold his shares to be open to buying a larger share in an NBA franchise if there was an opportunity.
Magic signed LeBron James for the Lakers
Magic Johnson helped secure the signing of free agent LeBron James in 2018. Johnson also tried to land superstar Anthony Davis during the same year however, that did not come to fruition. During his time as the president of basketball operations, the Los Angeles Lakers did not make the playoffs. He then resigned in 2019.

Despite securing the signing of James, Johnson was not with the team when they won the title. So it would be interesting to see Magic reunite with King James. Recently, James passed Johnson and took the sixth spot on the league’s all-time leading assists list.
