Every athlete has their own pre-game ritual. Some individuals listen to music, consume specific foods, and have a variety of other bizarre habits. Then there’s Michael Jordan, the all-time great basketball player. Another basketball legend, Magic Johnson, recently spoke about Jordan’s extraordinary pre-game routine that no other athlete can accomplish, and how Johnson once turned down Jordan’s invitation to join him.

When it comes to Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan, they are both basketball legends and good friends. Johnson dominated the 1980s, winning five NBA championships with the Los Angeles Lakers. And the 1990s were dominated by Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls, who defeated the mighty Lakers in the 1991 finals. And Jordan went on to win six titles with the Bulls.

Michael Jordan, who described himself as fiercely competitive, also enjoyed golf. Even at the peak of his career, he was frequently spotted on golf courses. After he retired, he spent most of his time playing golf. And one of his pregame routines was to play golf.

Magic Johnson once rejected the invitation of Michael Jordan to join him to hang out

Magic Johnson made an appearance on the podcast Club Shay Shay recently. Shannon Sharpe, the show’s host, addressed Jordan’s pregame routine at one point. He said Jordan played golf before the game, smoked cigarettes, and stayed up all night and yet managed to score 50 points. To this Johnson added, “Because he was the strongest, not basketball player, athlete I’ve ever seen”

Magic further said that Jordan once invited him to join him and hang out with him. To which he replied, “Mike, I can’t hang out to 4’0 clock, you have your drinks, get up to play 18 rounds of golf, sleep one hour and then come get 30 by half time.” He further added, “I can’t do that, I know who I am.” And we can see both individuals laughing at this story.

Then, Johnson shared his pregame ritual of listing to music. He also revealed that he liked to be alone and analyze the game. He got to the stadium way before anyone else, just to spend some time and make sure everyone is ready.
