WNBA Star Brittney Griner has always seemed to have a love-hate relationship with the media. Ever since her college days, Griner had a difficult time dealing with reporters and media platforms. And once she explained how she felt about the media when her video of her “coming out” went viral. As a matter of fact, she felt like it was made to be like a big Oprah Winfrey Show.

Griner has always been open about her sexuality and her close circle knew about it for a long time. Even when she was playing for Baylor, her teammates and coaching staff knew about her identity and they were comfortable with it. But when she was about to make her entrance into the WNBA, Griner had to go through some struggles regarding her sexuality.

Brittney Griner felt uncomfortable after the interview with SI

Just before she made her debut in the WNBA, Griner was going around doing interviews. And one of them included a Sports Illustrated interview along with the other top picks in the draft. Before the interview began, it was clarified that the topic of her sexuality was off the question as Griner had already committed to ESPN to talk about her entire story.

But the interview went off track pretty soon despite Griner trying her best to avoid that topic. But the host kept persisting about the topic, Griner gave up and said, “I’ve always been open about who I am and my sexuality.”

Griner was pretty frustrated after the interview had ended. However, the next thing she knows that the entire interview has gone viral online. She added, “When the video went up, everyone made it seem like that was my big Oprah sit-down, my coming-out confession. I was blown away by that reaction. “

“I mean, my Twitter bio had the word equality in it and a photo I did for the NOH8 campaign. I had also recently committed to doing a video for the It Gets Better Project and had posted about it on Facebook,” she added.

She also was not happy when she didn’t get to tell her entire story herself, like other athletes. Griner later went on to on ESPN and told her story. But she was not happy when her video went viral.
