Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic had been a part of a huge controversy with a close family member for the last few months. Last year in September, the Dallas Mavericks star filed a petition to resolve an issue regarding his name’s trademark, which is registered under the name of a member of his family. Moreover, the trademark is believed to be worth a huge amount of money and has been associated with Doncic since his rookie year. Recently, the legal dispute finally came to an end after Luka Doncic decided to take a step back by withdrawing his petition involving the trademark ‘LUKA DONCIC 7’.

The trademark, which is valued to have a great deal of financial potential, is owned by Luka Doncic’s mother, Mirjam Poterbin. The news about The Mavs star’s petition filing shot up in the media gaining much notoriety in September. However, the matter between Doncic and his mother Poterbin seems to have been resolved quietly.

As per the Dallas Morning News, “According to public records of the case on the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s website, Doncic on Dec. 5 terminated a petition that he filed on Sept. 6, in which he sought to cancel the registration of the trademark.”

Doncic used the logo in question during the early stages of his NBA career. As per reports, at age 19 in November 2018, Doncic permitted his mother to register ‘LUKA DONCIC 7″. However, the trademark was officially registered by Poterbin in January 2020.

As per the petition, Poterbin acted as a guide by providing assistance with indecision related to off-court business activities around Doncic. However, the petition also stated that Doncic notified his mother in July 2022 that he no longer agreed with the registration of the trademark in question and its usage by his mother. As a result, he sought the cancellation of the trademark’s registration by filing the petition. The reason suggested in the petition was the Mavericks star’s desire to consolidate his brand without his mother’s involvement.
