Stephen Curry, the superstar point guard of the Golden State Warriors, is the son of Dell and Sonya Curry. Both the parents in the Curry family were athletes; thus, the environment in the household was more similar to a locker room than the average family. Sonya was not the typical NBA mom; she took a very active role in her sons’ development and remains their biggest fan to this day.
Sonya Curry boldly defended her son Stephen Curry from “He’s soft” comments
The 2x NBA MVP took a little something from both his parents; the athletic genes and marksmanship from his father and the tenacity and work ethic from his mother. Apart from playing an instrumental role in shaping the Curry boys into NBA stars, Sonya is also one of their biggest fans. Filled with emotion, she can be seen screaming and jumping on the stands of her sons’ games. However, things went to another level in the 2016 NBA playoffs.
The NBA playoffs that year for the Warriors began at home against the James Harden-led Houston Rockets. In the early minutes of Game 1, Curry got into an ugly altercation with LeBron James’s new Los Angeles Lakers teammate Patrick Beverley. The two players almost got into a brawl when after fouling Curry, Beverley tangled with him, which lead to Curry pushing him away. The heated exchange set the tone for the rest of the series. The entire arena rallied behind their superstar, including Sonya.
She was noticeably upset after the incident and was cheering harder than before. When asked in an interview later on what was going through her head, Sonya admitted, ” I was cheering for him, for just standing up because a lot of people still think he is soft.”?She confessed to giving in to her mother’s instincts and letting herself go in that moment. The 6’2” skinny point guard throughout his career leading up to the NBA had a reputation of being ‘soft’. However, Curry made a statement after the bout with Beverley that year.?
