Iconic rapper Dr. Dre was recently honored with a prestigious award at the 2023 Grammy Awards on Sunday and Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson could not be happier. The 5x NBA champion recently took to Twitter to give his thoughts on a memorable night for the millionaire rapper and took a trip down memory lane. Turns out, Johnson and Dr. Dre had previously worked together for a tour that is still considered one of the biggest events in the history of hip-hop.

On Sunday, February 5, Dr. Dre became the first-ever recipient of the Dr. Dre Global Impact award. Following the historic event, Hall of Famer Magic Johnson expressed his happiness on social media and mentioned the time he worked with the rapper during one of his tours. It was the year 2000 and millions of fans were following the iconic ‘Up in the Smoke’ tour that had begun on June 15. The hip-hop tour featured renowned rappers Eminem and Ice Cube, among various other artists. The tour was headlined by Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. Notably, Johnson helped Dr. Dre with promotional events during the tour.

Johnson gave a shoutout to the legendary rapper via his Twitter handle where he wrote, “I’m so proud of my friend Dr. Dre for having a Grammy award named in his honor! It was a pleasure working with him on the Up in Smoke Tour!”

Evidently, 2000 was also a significant year for the purple and gold franchise. Led by NBA superstars Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal, the Lakers won the first championship of their three-peat in the same month that Dr. Dre’s tour had begun.

Magic shares a rare picture

In a 2022 episode of ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’, the host showed viewers a resurfaced photo of Magic Johnson with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, and Ice Cube. Kimmel then asked Magic if he promoted them. In response, the 5x NBA champion replied that he had promoted their ‘Up in the Smoke’ tour.

“At that time… I still think it is the no. 1 all-time highest-grossing hip-hop rap tour of all time,” Magic told Kimmel.
