After spending over ten months in Russian captivity, Brittney Griner was released a few weeks back. Ever since the arrest of the WNBA star, many fans and celebrities voiced their support for her freedom. One of the most important celebrities to rally for Griner was NBA superstar Stephen Curry. Being one of the most popular athletes in the world, Curry used his popularity and platform to take Griner’s problems to fans around the world. Recently, Curry’s former coach gave his take on the whole ordeal.

Former NBA All-Star, Mark Jackson, was the head coach of the Golden State Warriors from 2011 to 2014. He played a huge part in the development of Curry in his initial years in the league. He recently talked about the salary issues of WNBA players and playing overseas.

During an interview with TMZ, Mark Jackson was asked whether the WNBA should receive more help financial help from the NBA to support the WNBA. Jackson stated, “With all due respect, I don’t think that’s fair. That’s not the answer. I think we need to pay women more money obviously. And they certainly deserve it and their talent levels certainly demands it.”

The former Rookie of the Year added he is rooting for the players in the WNBA to get the money they deserve. He was then asked whether Griner’s detainment in Russia would be a deterrent for other players to overseas. Jackson replied, “Well I think we have to be more aware of where we going. Listened to President Biden’s speech about Griner yesterday, he said exactly that. Be careful what countries we are visiting.”

He noted that everyone should be aware of the different rules and regulations of the country they are traveling to. Jackson added that it not only applies to players who play overseas, but to everyone who travels outside the country.

WNBA protested to support Brittney Griner

After the detainment of Brittney Griner in Russia, WNBA players protested and decided not to play for Russian clubs. Griner has been playing for the Russian club UMMC Ekaterinburg since 2014. Many WNBA players play overseas basketball during the WNBA offseason because of the increase in pay overseas.

As per reports, the 2014 WNBA champion earned around $1 million every season playing in Russia. On the other hand, her salary for the Phoenix Mercury was a reported $227,000 which is the league maximum. Despite the huge money, no WNBA player played in Russia last season in protest of Griner’s arrest.
