Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner is all over the news once again. The Russian judiciary rejected all pleas from her side and upheld its decision of sentencing her to nine years in prison. She is currently undergoing the process of being transferred to a Russian penal colony and things are not looking good.

Various reports in the past have exposed the harsh living conditions in the penal colonies. Griner will have to endure such conditions while living with hostile inmates. According to a report by Daily Mail, due to her nationality, she could be subjected to inhumane treatment by the prisoners.

Report reveals a concerning update about Brittney Griner

Living in prison is no easy feat and Brittney Griner has spent over 200 days in a Russian prison. However, this is probably just the beginning of all her hardships.

Due to her sentence, she will have to spend nine years in a Russian penal colony. With harsh living conditions and hostile inmates, it will not be easy for the 6-feet-9-inch star.

A recent report read, “Griner is ‘likely to be jumped in the bathrooms’ and hear ‘slurs no one ever should hear…The Russian government taught people long ago that Americans are the enemy of humankind.'”

Various reports in the past have talked about the inhumane living conditions in penal colonies. Although Griner’s lawyers have no idea about where she is being transferred, it will most likely be in Serbia or Far East Russia.

Griner tried to go vegan while in prison

Following her controversial arrest in February, various NBA and WNBA stars have come out in support of Griner. Diana Taurasi, a WNBA legend, once revealed an interesting fact about BG.

She tried to go vegan in prison. However, she quickly got back to eating meat as sustaining a vegan diet while in prison is quite tough. Taurasi said, “She went back to eating meat. Which is kind of funny. Only BG would try to go vegan in a Russian prison.”

During her time in prison, Griner found solace in reading books and also letters from loved ones. However, this might quickly change once she is officially in a penal colony.

Communicating with her family members will be minimal as censors have to review all communications. Moreover, a lack of an interpreter during all times will certainly restrict Griner from communicating properly.
