Legends of Their Craft, Magic Johnson and Denzel Washington Once Proved Admiration Between Old Friends: “Show Time Lakers Gave Us So Many Memories”

Many consider Los Angeles to be the city where stars turn into legends by mastering their craft. This statement holds true, especially in the case of superstars Denzel Washington and Magic Johnson. They walked into the city with big dreams in their eyes, they explored the opportunities presented to them and gradually became household names by perfecting their craft. What the city also gave them was the opportunity to create friendships that would last a lifetime – friendships like theirs that would date back to times when the Internet was relatively nonexistent. Denzel and Johnson share a bond of pure admiration and they don’t shy away from talking about it.

In May 2022, Denzel Washington and Magic Johnson attended the Boys and Girls Club of America’s National Conference. They were guest speakers and shared the stage for a sit-down. As they spoke about life and experiences, the two legends were asked to talk about their friendship with each other.

Denzel Washington claimed that it was difficult to speak about Johnson as they have so many memories and moments together. However, he picked on a few incidents leaving Johnson and the audience in a fit of laughter.

The Academy Award winner spoke about Johnson’s time with the Los Angeles Lakers. A time when, in the span of a single decade, the Lakers reached the NBA Finals 9 times and won the title 5 times. He said, “The showtime Lakers gave us so many memories, so many beautiful days, so many winning days. There are too many memories to count from that time right up till this time.”

The NBA Hall of Famer, on the other hand, had lots to say about his dear friend. He opened with a line about Denzel’s personality and individualism. He said, “D is someone every man wanted to be”. The NBA Legend then commented on Denzel’s craft and applauded him for the same.

Following this, Johnson stated that while admiring Denzel for his profession, he also admires the side that the public doesn’t get to see. It is the side of Denzel when he is just a husband, a father, and a friend. Johnson said, “I love him (Denzel). He exposed me to worlds that I didn’t know about.”.

The five-time NBA Champion recollected a very old interaction between the two. He stated that it was a time when his wife, Cookie, and he was new to the City of Angels and Denzel’s family had invited them over for dinner. Johnson said, “He broke down LA and broke down everything I needed to know and we’ve been friends ever since.” Johnson repeatedly expressed his love for the actor and thanked him for being the man he is.
