The 2023 draft is gaining popularity solely due to one reason, Victor Wembanyama. The 7’4″ French international has captured the basketball world with his insane genetics. At just 18 years old, he has looked NBA-ready each time he takes the court. Highly regarded as the best prospect since LeBron James, Wembanyama could make an instant impact on any franchise. However, due to one single reason, the Los Angeles Lakers could lose their chance at having the 18-year-old despite the high odds of being in the lottery.

The purple and gold made a franchise-altering trade back in 2020. The young core of the 17-time champions was sent to the New Orlean Pelicans along with some picks to bring in Anthony Davis. The Brow was instrumental in the Lakers’ 2020 championship run. But over the last three seasons, AD has failed to replicate his success on the court. The once dominant big man now looks inconsistent. Moreover, the Lakers are in deep waters with a 3-10 record so far this season.

Despite a dominant showing against Kevin Durant’s Nets, the Lake show are far off from having a respectable season. With their current form, LeBron James and the Lakers are looking at being a lottery team. However, the Pelicans have the power to steal away their 2023 draft position.

Los Angeles Lakers need more than just one win?

Back in 2020, when the Lakers got the chance to add one of the most dominating players in the game, Rob Pelinka didn’t hesitate to put it all on the line. Likewise, along with some highly talented youngsters, the Lakers also gave the New Orleans Pelicans an option to swap picks in 2023. With their current 3-10 record, the Lakers are one of the worst teams in the league. On their way to ranking high in the draft lottery next season, the purple and gold will most likely lose any chance at having Wembanyama with New Orleans ready to steal.

Anthony Davis’ decline over the past few seasons seems to be a key factor in the Lakers’ downfall. Likewise, the fans ripped apart LeBron James for pushing the franchise to draft the eight-time All-Star in 2020.

It seems either way for the Lakers smells doom. Another losing season might add salt to the wound if they land up with the first pick in next year’s draft. However, not all hope is still lost. The Lakers have the tools to turn their franchise around with just one move. With just 13 games under their belt, the 17-time champions have all the time on their hands. However, their hesitancy is holding them back. One blockbuster trade could make the Lakers mighty once again. It’s now up to Rob Pelinka to accept the situation and put their picks on the line once again. Moreover, pressure also falls on the King and his troops to deliver frequent results similar to their demolition of the Brooklyn Nets.
