At the All-Star Game in Cleveland this year, the ‘King’ would captain his team to victory. He supported the 50 point performance from Stephen Curry, by hitting the game-winning fadeaway jumper. During the post-game interview, James revealed a key reason behind his aspiration to be great.
LeBron James on Michael Jordan
Michael Jordan is an inspiration to not just fans, but also to NBA players. One example of such a player is the ‘King’ himself. In the post-game presser, LeBron revealed his fandom for MJ and how the latter inspired him.
“I did not want to lose the opportunity to shake the man’s hand who inspired me throughout my childhood,” said LeBron.
“Haven’t had much dialogue with him in my 19 years in this business, but part of me wouldn’t be here without MJ’s inspiration. I always wanted to be like him growing up,” he explained.
“It’s crazy that the game-winning shot tonight was a fadeaway, and it was inspired by MJ,” he added.
It is clear that LeBron looks up to ‘His Airness’ even today. The phrase ‘Be like Mike’ is evident among NBA stars also, it seems.
The GOAT Debate
As the years have gone by, one debate that has stood the test of time is about the Greatest of All-Time. At present, this discussion is primarily between MJ and LeBron. Although MJ has the upper hand at present, LeBron’s consistency is still keeping him in the fight. At 37, LeBron continues to dominate games through his scoring, passing, and rebounding. In fact, he was the driving force behind whatever success the Lakers have enjoyed this season.
