The unfortunate death of Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna along with 7 others in a helicopter crash shocked the world. The horrific accident that happened on January 26, 2020, took 9 lives. And this saddened the world. Just three days after the crash, a private citizen Rafael Mendez filed a complaint with the LASD after he witnessed Deputy Joey Cruz show a bartender graphic photos of the crash.

The attorneys of Vanessa Bryant hired a tech expert David Freskos to investigate. He testified that Los Angeles Sheriff’s Deputies “violated fundamental forensic policies” when they deleted the crash site photos and turned in brand new phones.

As per reports, Chief Jorge Valdez acknowledged in court on Tuesday that he helped cover up the citizen complaint for nearly a month.

Vanessa Bryant filed a lawsuit

Freskos explained that key data was deleted from the 28 devices belonging to LASD and LA County Fire Department staff who took and shared the photos, according to a forensic analysis conducted by tech firm Kroll Inc. Also, 9 out of 11 phones turned in were new phones. The LASD staff gave different reasons for changing their phones. One said that he lost his phone, another said his camera lens broke, etc.

The helicopter crash turned the lives of victims’ families upside down. Another man who lost his wife and daughter in the crash said that he is scared that the photos will come out. Last year, it was found out that the pilot’s error was the major reason behind the crash.

Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna and others were on their way to a youth basketball game. And Bryant had been using the helicopter for years at that point. He had been regularly traveling by helicopter during and after his NBA career. After retiring from the NBA, Bryant had been coaching his daughter’s team.

Millions of fans around the world consider him one of the greatest Lakers ever. He formed a formidable partnership with teammate Shaquille O’Neal. And they led the Lakers to a three-peat from 2000 to 2002. Also, they were the last team to achieve a three-peat. The duo went through a long beef, however; they mended things later on. Shaq recently admitted that he should’ve called or texted Bryant more even though both were busy.

After retiring, Bryant focused his energy on some of his other passions. He is the first-ever athlete to win an Oscar award. After his demise, the Bryant family continues to give back to the community.
