All-Time NBA great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has always been vocal about social justice and politics in the country. The Lakers legend was one of the first to speak about discrimination and injustice in society. Even when he was just in college, he supported Muhammad Ali’s stance on the Vietnam war. And he continues to speak and write about various issues prevailing in our society.
Now, he has strongly opposed Herschel Walker running for the Senate seat as a Republican nominee election in Georgia. He will be challenging incumbent Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock.

Walker played football for the University of Georgia. During his college career, he earned consensus All-American honors three times. He also won the 1982 Heisman Trophy.
In 1999, the running back was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar firmly opposes Herschel Walker
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has always been an advocate for professional athletes taking up active roles in politics. And he admitted that in his article about Herschel Walker. He wrote that he always argued that athletes should use their privileged platform to better the lives of others. He says that it’s the right thing to do and also elevates professional sports in the views of everyone.
However, the ‘Big A’ admitted that sometimes athletes choose to take advantage of their fame by running for political office. He says that it gives great power to someone just because they could play a sport.
The NBA legend admits professional athletes can have very important qualities. However, he believes that more should be demanded to hold political office.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar wrote, “Is he the embodiment of “giving back to the people” or of using his fame so he can exploit the people? Spoiler alert: it’s the latter.”
He continued, “It’s painful for me to openly oppose an athlete of Walker’s stature, especially after all my preaching about athletes taking responsibility. It’s also painful for me to oppose an African American, especially running in Georgia, which has been full-speed ahead passing racist laws that restrict voting and restrict schools to discuss race. A Black U.S. Senator could help reverse the state’s enthusiasm for racist laws. Just not this Black candidate.”
