For a long time, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has stood for social justice. Ever since being a college athlete, he has walked with purpose. Decades after his retirement, the Los Angeles Lakers great began his Substack to share his views on politics and various ongoing problems. In light of a dangerous saga brewing in America, he voiced his opinions once again, this time a plea to get the young children to safety.
Notably, in a recent lawsuit several hair health companies came under fire. The products of brands such as L’Oreal and others reportedly increase the chances of developing cancer. Nearly 60 lawsuits were filed regarding the issue. According to the plaintiffs, the companies advertised these products while being aware of the various risks and complications it carries along with them. The Black women in particular have been affected by such products.
Reacting to the situation, Karem Abdul-Jabbar scrambled in his own views on his Substack. According to the six-time MVP, such practices are life-threatening and he hopes they don’t continue among the coming generations.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar speaks for the protection of children
The former Los Angeles Lakers center educated his readers about the history of Black hair in particular. The 75-year-old pointed out how afros were once a direct statement to oppose White beauty ideals. The most recognizable face to promote their natural hair was activist Angela Davis mentioned Abdul-Jabbar.

He also believes there is a particular relation to why Black women are most affected by hair relaxer products. Notably, according to him, they used products such as hair straighteners to change their natural hair. They did all this to be accepted by the White community and felt it would look more attractive as stated by the Hall of Fame big man.

In addition, Karem Abdul-Jabbar also pointed out Black men using dangerous lye-based products to conk their hair. To conclude, the former all-time scoring leader of the NBA felt promoting the use of these products could prove fatal. In his recent Substack, he wrote, “Whatever the reason, it’s a life-threatening practice that we don’t want to pass down to our children.”
