Last month, the Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving stirred controversy with his endorsement of a film on social media. He has since been suspended by the franchise. Irving had pledged $500k towards organizations that fight social injustices, particularly against discrimination and oppression. He has also issued an apology for his post. But his response has not satisfied a few.

Former Washington Wizards player Marcin Gortat has allegedly invited Irving to visit his home country of Poland. He said that the trip would be an educational one for the player. Poland has seen the strain and the affliction that was the Holocaust. The history of the nation embodies how its people grappled with the terrors of Nazi Germany and World War II.

Kyrie Irving had promoted the film, “Hebrews to Negroes: Wake up Black America”, that carried a lot of anti-semitic material. Gortat said that this was “completely wrong” of the player to do. He extended Irving an invitation to go to Poland, if the Nets star wanted to learn about Jewish history and whether it aligned with what he said. “He will learn more about the whole situation”.
The Brooklyn Nets stated that Kyrie Irving had to fulfill 6 objectives before he can return to the team. Coincidentally half of those requirements involve the player doing some learning.
Kyrie Irving needs to brush up on history lessons
The All-Star guard had to complete sensitivity training and anti-Semitism training, and meet with Jewish leaders and members of the Anti-Defamation League.

CJ McCollum, president of the National Basketball Players Association, also broke his silence last week regarding the incident. He said that the whole episode was a “learning experience” for all. He believed that Irving did not understand the gravity of the situation. CJ expects all players to educate themselves when they talk about certain topics or promotional material on their social media.

Marcin Gortat echoed a similar sentiment. Even though he is not Jewish, Gortat wanted to spread awareness about its history.
Nets head coach, Jacque Vaughn reported that Irving’s suspension which was initially for 5 games has now been extended. Vaughn couldn’t confirm when Kyrie Irving would be back on the lineup.
